Mozilla as the „third part“ – not good approach!
I am really wondering about the logic and rationality of European Commission’s decision to invite Mozilla as the „third part“ in the antitrust case against Microsoft. CNET News informs: „Mozilla has been granted a seat at the table in the European Commission’s antitrust case against Microsoft, an EC source said Tuesday.“
My question is: Why, misters technocrats, why? Mozilla and Microsoft are competitors. Mozilla Firefox is the most popular alternative and substitute for Microsoft Internet Explorer, which means Mozilla is not independent. No question about the fact that Mozilla can be the source of expertise, but Microsoft can be it as well. Therefore I would recommend EC to re-think about its own decision and to cancel „third part status“ for Mozilla.
Yes, it is very important to promote competition and the voice, as well as arguments of Mozilla must be visible and heard. On the other hand, in position of competitor, to be the “third party” is not just the best option. In my opinion, becoming the witness or additional plaintiff is better role for Mozilla.
I like Mozilla Firefox and I would never open Internet Explorer while accessing to Internet. But on the other hand, to look on Mozilla as an independent expert in Microsoft’s antitrust case represents mixing, changing and misunderstanding the market role of both.
